Photobucket had recently changed their policy and now all the images from my 650+ blog posts are disabled. I am slowly editing them by moving my images to my own server at AWS, but it will take time. In case there is a particular old post you want to see the images of, kindly drop me a mail at mizohican@gmail.com and I'll keep that at a high priority. Thank you.

Chp 138. Interview with Muanpuii Saiawi IFS

Meet Muanpuii Saiawi.

IFS Batch of 2005, the Media proclaimed her as Mizoram’s greatest Pride when it comes to the Indian Civil Service, making a new earth shattering NATIONAL RECORD in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) by bagging BOTH the two most prestigious IFS Award recently, namely, the Ambassador Bimal Sanyal Memorial Gold Medal for the Best Officer Trainee and the Ambassador Bimal Sanyal Memorial Silver Medal for the Best Dissertation. Nobody in Indian history has ever received both awards before!!! She was deservingly declared as The Best Probationer of 2005 Batch of IFS Officers.

On her first UPSC attempt in 2003, she made it to IA&AS (Indian Audits and Accounts Service). She wrote the exam again in 2004 and got into IRS (Indian Revenue Service)! But again, she decided to aim even higher and wrote the exam again in 2005. She made it to IFS (Indian Foreign Service)!!!

She’s always been my inspiration and role model when it comes to the civil service exam. Apart from that, she’s also my role model when it comes to leading a devoted life. She’s selfless, cheerful, and always ready to help out anyone. If there is one true example of “What goes around comes around”, then she is it. Good things come to those who are pure at heart. Amen!

In spite of her hectic schedule (she’s flying to South Korea next week for her new posting), she managed to find time to meet me (surprise surprise, she’s even a regular reader of my blog!). She even agreed to do an interview!

Some of you may be familiar with my style of interview. I’ve interviewed Mizo celebrities like Jenny (Former World Boxing Champion) and Zonunsangi (Zonet TV anchor) before. I like adding a lot of humor and good clean fun to my interviews. The Print media and other professionals have interviewed such personalities before, so I don’t want my questions to sound redundant. Hence I ask them questions that others wouldn’t have asked before. Some people strangely considered that as an insult and that I am making fun of people we should be proud of. That is not the case. I have the utmost respect for such people. It’s just that, when I add the “zing” in my questions, I bring out the “fun” in them. If you can’t stand such sense of humor, then with all due respect, I wouldn’t recommend you to read this post.

The interview was a great success. Muanpuii was sporty as usual, laughing out a lot and blushing sometimes, but nevertheless, answered every question.

We picked her up from JNU and proceeded to CP for the interview. We had a small problem initially with the interview venue, because it was Sunday AND Friendship Day, so all the hangout places like CCD, KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Costa’s etc were all jam packed. We finally found a good place at Baskin Robins.

The interview:

What subjects did you take for the UPSC 2005?

I took Public Administration and Anthropology.

How many hours did you use to study?

Well… ummm… I never used to time myself but let’s say… approximately 8 hours a day. That was for around 6 months until the Prelims exam. After that, for the Mains exam, there were so many different coaching classes I go to that there was hardly any time to study at all! That hectic lifestyle went on for around 5 months until the Mains exam.

Is it true that you used to wrap your study materials in a transparent polythene bag and read them while taking a shower? (yeah it was really hard trying to keep a straight face while asking this question).

NO!!!! (laughs out loud)… but… (gives a silly grin) sometimes I read while washing my clothes!

Oh! And how long do you wash in between, say two chapters?

(laughs out again) it was never like that…

Ok maybe it’s easier to answer this way. How much do you read while washing a blouse?

(giggles) well… two A4 size study materials…

And jeans? How much do you study while washing jeans?

(laughs again) I need both hands to wash my jeans, so I don’t read anything then.

So you’re saying jeans is bad, and that if we want to become like you we shouldn’t wear jeans…

Yes… NO!!! I mean… what? You can wear what you want… I’m just saying…

That we cannot read anything while washing jeans.

Yes.

So we shouldn’t wear jeans if we want to read.

Yes... NO!!! Aaaargh. I’m going to kill you!!!

(After 2 minutes of uncontrollable laughter and a chase inside Baskin Robins that cannot be mentioned here…)

Apart from all the studies then and the work now, how is your romance life?

(blushes) romance? Ummm…… uhhh…. It’s like the waves (shows the up and down action of waves and then laughs out loud. I was biting my lips not to laugh too. After sometime she became serious) Well… seriously speaking, you know me personally. There had never been such waves in my life so far. And I haven’t found Mr. Right yet, but yeah I have my fair share of suitors (smiles).

That’s not surprising. You’ve got the looks and the brains. Right now you’re the most eligible woman in Mizoram.

Yeah rightttt….

Seriously! And just to give some chance to your ardent fans, what would be the minimum criteria or eligibility for somebody to woo you?

(giggles) comon! You don’t expect me to reveal that (giggles again).

Be a sport please (smiles) Just give us 4-5 points on what you see in a future life partner.

ummm… (smiles) well.. first and foremost, he should be a man of God. And then after that, he should have brains, obviously. Thirdly… he should have a great sense of humor. And last point… ummm… he must be polished.

Polished? As in…

Polished as in… you know… polished.

As in Cherry Blossom polish?

(laughs out again) NO! I mean polished as in, refined, well mannered… someone who opens the door for me…

So basically you mean a door man?

(laughs and punches me) You…. You….

And moving on to my next question…. (yeah I was enjoying it!) lets talk about your new posting. Where in South Korea?

It’s in the capital Seoul (she pronounced it “Soul”).

Oh! It’s pronounced “Soul”? I always used to say “C-OL”.

The “e” is silent.

Ok. Thanx for letting me know. And what’s the language called?

Korean.

Script?

Hangeul (han-gul)

Currency?

Won.

What’s the equivalent of Won in Indian rupee?

1 rupee would equal to around 20 Won. But the cost of living is much much higher than here in India.

Which side of the road do the people drive over there?

They drive on the left side of the road.

Ah. So it is a former British colony?

No. But it was once under the Japanese. Even today, there is quite a strong Anti-Japan sentiment among the general population because of its violent history.

Uhuh… and what about Korean movies which are a big craze among the Mizos. You watch Korean movies?

Not that much. But I’ve seen two Korean movies recently and I really love them.

What are they?

“A moment to remember” and “Spring Summer Fall Winter... and Spring”.

Source amazon.com
Well, will you send us Korean movies from Korea?

Of course! That I definitely will do!

Thank you, thank you. Now coming to your posting, what exactly is your designation? Imagine you are explaining that to a layman.

Well, I will be working as “3rd secretary” when I join the Indian Embassy over there. The hierarchy is usually like this: Ambassador followed by Counselor, followed by 2nd Secretary, followed by 3rd Secretary. Since the Counselor is not there, I will be third in command at the Indian Embassy.

That’s so cool! And will you be staying at the Indian Embassy?

(laughs out again) No, it’s not like that. It’s similar to the fact that politicians don’t live in the Parliament House here in India. They just go there for work. Similarly, we will be going to the Embassy on a daily basis for work, but our residence is outside the Embassy premises.

Oh! Ok. And what about diplomatic immunity? Do you have it, and do you mind explaining it briefly to us?

Yes, I do have diplomatic immunity. Diplomatic immunity is that special privilege we diplomats have at a foreign soil, in which we cannot be tried for any case at a foreign Court. But we can be deported back to our country and tried there.

Uh huh. And what about North Korea. Do you have diplomatic immunity over there?

As a diplomat, yes something like that… but the situation at North is more complicated because of the obvious reasons. Plus I need to be assigned to the Embassy over there and all other red tapes and bureaucracy etc. I can’t just explain the situation just like that, plus it will not be a wise move to make to talk about any of our foreign affairs relationship…

Yes yes I completely understand. So let’s not talk about sensitive information anymore. Instead let’s discuss about your romance life again (grins).

Noooo… (buries face with her hands).

Oh comon! This is what most Mizo bachelors would want to know! (Points at my friend Tawia) Imagine he is one of your suitors (Tawia nearly gets a heart attack). What are the ten questions you would ask him?

Ten???? That’s too much!!!

Just ten. The first ten questions at the top of your head. Remember it’s all in good fun.

(laughs) ok ok. Well the first question is…

Look at him, not me.

I am so going to kill you (laughs). Ok my 10 questions would be (looks at Tawia):
  1. Are you a man of God?
  2. Do you have a steady job?
  3. How is your relationship with your mother or a significant woman in your life?
  4. What kind of relationships did you have with women in the past?
  5. What kind of books do you read?
  6. When was the last time you cried and why?
  7. Do you like kids?
  8. Can you cook?
  9. What’s your idea of a romantic date?
  10. What is your dream woman?
(Tawia turned towards me and gave me a look. I understood that look immediately: He failed in all ten questions.)

Wow! Thank you so much for that important information, Miss Muanpuii. I can picture many of the Mizo hopefuls out there writing the ten questions down on a note pad.

The pleasure is all mine (smiles sweetly).

[So we ended the interview then, and got down to more important discussions like how to prepare for the upcoming MCS (Mizoram Civil Service) examination and which chocolate flavored drink should we order next. Finally we headed back to her hostel. She was kind enough to invite us all up to her room, even though it was already past 10pm.]

Nice room!

Thank you.

I was expecting it to be a bit untidy, with all your heavy schedules and stuff. It’s as if you ran ahead in front of us and cleaned up your room before letting us in.

Ummm…

So (looking at the map on the wall), can you tell us where exactly is South Korea?

Of course, its right over here (points it out on the map).

Now can you just pose (aims the camera)…

No!!! Min bawl eee!!!

Bawl lo. Seriously, I’m just taking the snap for my collection.

Ok (posing).

Now smile.

*click*

Let’s talk about Music now, shall we?

Yup. At last, something decent (smiles).

So what kind of music do you listen to?

I listen to mainly P&W songs. Then there’s Sarah McLachlan and Josh Groban. I like classic rock too, like Queen and Manfred Mann. Wait! Don’t mention Manfred Mann, people will think I listen to such old genre of music!

Ok I won’t mention Manfred Mann.

When it comes to style of music, I love Baroque… you know Bach?

Well, I never knew him personally, but yeah I heard he’s a great composer (grins). Speaking of Bach, I hear you are really really really good with the keyboard!

(blushes) I’m not thaaaat good…

What is your… rank when it comes to music, like a yellow belt, black belt etc in karate?

I am a Grade 7.

And to a layman, that would be…?

Well, the maximum grade is a Grade 8. We have to write an exam called The Royal School of Music exam, and an English man comes to conduct the exam all the way from UK.

Wow! So you are just one grade away from becoming the next Beethoven! So how long did you take to reach grade 7 from 1?

Well actually I started from Grade 5 since I could play the keyboard pretty good then. It didn’t take me long to reach 7.

That is so impressive! And speaking of Beethoven, can you finish his unfinished symphony?

(throws a book at me)

There is one small part I can play on the keyboard. My sisters used to teach me when I was just a kid. I don’t even remember the name but I still remember bits and parts of it.

By all means, the piano is all yours.

(I sat on the huge piano and my fingers went “ting ting ting ting ting ting…”)

(laughs out loud) That is so sweet of you to know that. That symphony is called “Fur elise” by Beethoven and it’s one of my all time favorites. Here I will play it for you.

(Muanpuii sat on the piano and her fingers moved like magic, full of passion and sleight. My friends and I couldn’t move even a bit until she finished playing. We were entrapped in the beauty of her sheer talent and rapture. We all applauded after she played it.)

Thank you thank you (smiles)

Can you teach me?

Sure

Thank you so much for teaching me, Muanpuii. It was an honour.

You’re welcome.

So do you have the medals you won?

No, they are with my parents in Mizoram. It’s safer there (laughs).

Are they running trophies type, you know, where you have to hand it over next year…

No no, it’s mine for keeps (grins).

Gold plated?

Yup.

And what was the name of your dissertation topic that won you the medal?

“Reemergence of the left in Latin America and it’s implication for India”. My guide was JNU Professor Varun Sahini.

Phew! That’s a pretty long topic! I’m sure a couple of marks were added on the length alone (grins). Speaking of adding, how come you don’t look like the stereotype Civil Servant with protruding belly and double chin? Isn’t it true people add a lot of weight once they join the service?

No that is a gross misconception. There are many thin Officers too (smiles). I guess I watch what I eat to a certain degree.

What’s your weight? (smiles)

Hmmm… if I tell you that, then I’ll have to kill you (laughs). Actually I am around 56.

Do you mind if I show the people that?

Well… (thinks for a long time) ok (smiles) Anyway my weight is quite proportional to my height and body mass, so it’s ok.

Thank you dear Muanpuii. It has been a real pleasure for sparing us some time to get to know you better. May the good Lord protect you in South Korea and may you continue carrying the good name of India and Mizoram wherever you go.

That is so sweet of you. God bless you too and all the best for the upcoming MCS exam.

Thank you Miss Muanpuii.

We stayed at her apartment for a few more minutes, singing while Muanpuii played the piano. She is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known, and she truly deserves all the accolades she had received. We wish her all the very best in her endeavors and may she continue making the Mizo name proud wherever she goes. May the good Lord watch over her in everything that she does and once again, a very big thanks to her for the interview. God bless you Muanpuii Saiawi. You are not only studious, hard working and dedicated, but also a whole lot of fun, sporty and humorous.

Translation in Mizo:

A big thanx to my roomie Maduh-a (mama)’ s N-73 phone cam. Also a special thanx to Tawia for bringing his handy-cam along. Interview videos will be out shortly as soon as we find the bloody “handy-cam to PC” cable!

Chp 137. Zombie Movie Marathon

With the MCS (Mizoram Civil Service) exam coming up next month, my room-mates and I have stopped all daily activities other than food, crap, bath and 30 minutes of blogging. But all books and no leisure makes Jack a nerdy boy. So on this upcoming Saturday, we are all going to have a Movie marathon. And what better way to revitalize our stagnant brain cells than to make that a ZOMBIE Movie Marathon!

I know that still sounds a bit nerdy, but hey, we’re old now ok?

I’ve been a Zombie fan since time immemorial. The first horror movie I watched was “Thriller”, the Michael Jackson movie, when I was just 5 or 6 years old. And yup, that movie was indeed zombifying. The make-up used on the living-dead scared me for the next 5 years. And the make-up on Michael Jackson scared me for 10. Oh wait, that wasn’t make-up, it was just “plastic surgery”

In the “Epic of Gilgamesh”, the goddess Ishtar swore:
I will knock down the Gates of the Netherworld,
I will smash the door posts, and leave the doors flat down,
And will let the dead go up to eat the living!
And the dead will outnumber the living!
And that’s exactly why I loooove zombie flicks.

I seldom watch horror movies, especially those Japanese horror movies with tiny subtitles! Man, those are some really really scary stuff. But if the movie involves the “rotting walking dead feeding on the living” plotlines, I just go crazy! George A. Romero rocks! Just as how Stephen King is to horror novels, Romero is to zombie movies. (By the way, King and Romero are good friends. King was even reported to have played the role of a zombie in one of Romero’s films). The zombies in Romero’s films (aptly named “Romero Zombies”) have a large cult following among lovers of the supernatural and the unexplained.

Romero gave us “The Night of the Living Dead” in 1968, proving to the World that a movie need not have a high budget in order to be a box-office Hit. Legendary movies such as “The Exorcist”, “The Omen” and “The Shining” are all said to have been influenced heavily by this movie. Such was the masterpiece of Romero.

Which made me wonder, how come we’ve never had Bollywood zombie movies? I’m sure it would have been a great hit. Of course if it was a Bollywood movie, there would have been at least three songs with “imported” background dancers and an item number by Himesh in between the part that the zombies are 10 feet away and the part where they are 5 feet away. And it wouldn’t be necessary to run away from the flesh eating zombie rampage, after all, the Hero is there! The Hero would beat the shit out of any zombie that crosses his path.

Remember all those movies where we used to complain that “no matter how many times the hero clobber the bad guys (or vice versa), the person receiving the beating always gets up again”. He just simply refuses to die! Now at least the directors have a good excuse, because the zombies are already dead! They can shoot a whole 40 minutes of a “fight scene” now, showing the same two people thrashing each other and hurling each other through brick walls over and over again!

Anyway, the list of Movies for our Grand Saturday Movie Marathon is:
  1. Night of the Living Dead
  2. Night of the Living Dead (1990 remake)
  3. Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake)
  4. Land of the Dead
  5. Shaun of the Dead
  6. Resident Evil
  7. Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Phew! That’s at least 12 hours of hardcore Zombie gore, running amok and eating the brains and flesh of the defenseless humans. It’s going to be a great Saturday!

We couldn’t lay our hands on “Day of the Dead”. Otherwise it would have been awesome to watch the entire series in order, all at once (Night, Dawn, Day, Land). We also couldn’t find the original version of “Dawn of the Dead”, hence had to settle for the 2004 version. The problem is, in this latest version, the zombies are very different. They don’t walk slowly in a mindless fashion anymore (after all they’re supposed to be brain dead right?). Instead, they have amazing reflexes and super strength! They jump over walls, outrun vehicles and growl like a wolf. It’s like the X-Men meets the Addams Family! Crazy. That is so unzombie-like.

And Romero will be out with the fifth part “Diary of the Dead” soon. I can’t wait to watch it. Another movie release I’m fervently waiting for is the third part of Resident Evil entitled “Resident Evil: Extinction”. Nothing to make my day than seeing the sexy Milla Jovovich kicking zombie ass.

“Shaun of the Dead” is the only comedy-horror in our list. It has a high rating of 8.0/10 at imdb.com, hence it can’t be a cheap B-Grade horror flick with overacting actors and incidents that makes you point at the TV screen and scream “you stupid (censored)!!! Why did you do that? Nobody in real life would ever do that!!!”.

The problem with zombie movies is, most of them are B-Grade kinda movies, you know, all those “Return of the living dead” series and “Tales from the Crypt” TV shows. Bad actors, bad acting, bad setting, bad clichés, bad make-ups, bad plots. All bad. That is why we decided to watch only the Romero zombies, Resident Evil series and “Shaun of the Dead”. Coz once we’re done with the Movie Marathon, we have to go back to our studies again. We definitely do not want to be distracted by lingering thoughts like “damn that movie sucks”…

And yeah, you gotta love some of the Taglines of the movies we’re going to watch!

When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.
- Dawn of the Dead
The dead have waited. The day has come.
- Day of the Dead
It’s just one of those days when you’re feeling a little… dead.
- Shaun of the Dead
Everyone died. The trouble is, they didn’t stay dead.
- Resident Evil

I took the Zombie Apocalypse Survival quiz, and it seems I have only a 46% chance of surviving in case of a zombie apocalypse.

But still, that’s better than my girlfriend who has just a 22% chance of surviving! Ha ha ha! But the more important question now is, if she turns into a zombie and I didn’t, will I have the courage to shoot her brains out? What about you? Suppose somebody you love deeply has been infected and will turn into a zombie any minute, what will you do?
  1. Blow her brains out before she turns into a zombie.
  2. Wait for her to die first, and then blow her brains out the moment she starts to change.
  3. Tie her up and leave her. How can you ever kill the sweet thing?
  4. Infect your own blood with her infected blood, so that the two of you will turn into zombies together.
With that, I leave you all for now. Have a great weekend, and if you are planning to mail me after Saturday, write softly, because I am going to be quite jumpy

Chp 136. Mizo slang among the youth [Mizo]

Due to the over-whelming number of responses, I have separated the previous post [Mizo Contemporary Slang] into two, one dealing with Mizo slang derived only from English, and this one dealing with Mizo slang derived from… well it would be politically incorrect to say “Mizo” since most of them are derived from “sounds” and “made up code words”

It usually starts as a special code shared by a group of friends, and the word gets out, spreads to other group of friends, and soon everybody starts using that word Such words are not in any Mizo dictionary, and the older Mizo folks have no idea what it means. The difficulty with this section is, there are just too many such slangs, as each group have their own code. Hence only the really popular ones are listed. Feel free to contribute the slangs anyway. Enjoy.

MIZO SLANG

90

Ok the only reason why I put this up here is because I always used to think it was the Mizos who made this “slang” up, until I found out recently that non-Mizos too actually use it. When someone use 90 as a verb “va 90 zuai i la” (lets go and 90), it means “to go to a local wineshop and ask the shopkeeper to pour 90ml (large) on a glass and drink it right there at the shop itself (which by the way is not a bar)”.

Amos

"Amos" or "Mos-a" is used in reference to (usually) guys who “swim upstream”, if you know what I mean. The person need not be a stereotype gay (effeminate, puts on make-up, hair wax etc). He is content with his lifestyle and may even have one or two Heterosexual relationships before he receives his true calling. “Amosa Pub ah kal i la” (Let us go to a Gay Pub), “Saw pa inchei dan saw a va Mos-a ve” (That dude is dressed up so… gay) and “Jail ah chuan an lo Amos ang che” (In jail, they’ll do “things” to you).

Bawl

There is no direct meaning of this word in English. It basically means, “To pull one’s leg in such a way that the one who is pulling your leg is only doing so to make fun of you slyly, while the innocent victim is unknowingly playing along, not knowing that the other person does not actually mean what he is saying to him”. Phew, that’s a long translation to the single word!

Bon

This is another word that has made its way into the foray of “normal Mizo words”. Older generation Mizos would definitely disapprove of its usage. “Bon” is used to intensify a particular verb or adjective. “A sang bawn tawp” (He is very tall), “Ka ngei bawn tawp” (I really hate him) and “Ka hah bawn tawp” (I am extremely exhausted).

Chhas

Other slangs for this are “saas” and the less popular “chhis”, “chhus”, “chhos” etc. “Chhas” is definitely the most popular slang word in Mizoram. In fact it has become so popular that it has now become a normal Mizo word. It has three main meanings:
  1. “A beautiful girl”. Even though some people use it to describe a good looking male too, most of the people use the word in reference to a female only. “a chhas khawp mai” (Literally: She is very “chhas”) which means she is very pretty.
  2. The second usage is to describe a boyfriend or girlfriend. In this case, the word “chhas” refers to either sexes. “Ka chhas a ni” which means “He/she is my boyfriend/girlfriend”. This term has now been accepted as a formal word by most people.
  3. The third category is quite demeaning: It is used in eve-teasing incidents. Suppose a bunch of guys in a car call out “chhas” (beautiful girl) to a girl walking by the road, then it is purely an incident of grave eve-teasing and most girls take it as an extreme insult and offence. Even though the “chhas” here and the “chhas” in the first explanation means the exact same thing, the former usage is more about complimenting somebody in a positive way, especially a friend or somebody close. But in the latter incident, it’s more about degrading women and treating them as sex objects.

CK

This is a funny slang, as it is pronounced “C-K”. I always used to wonder who made this word up. It is another very popular slang that most people are familiar with, but the actual abbreviation is still murky. One rumor says that it actually stands for “changkang” which means “sophisticated”. However, in contemporary youth expression, “CK” means “to flirt”. “Johna leh Mary an ck a” (John and Mary flirted with each other), “Hman party ah khan i va ck ve” (You were quite a flirt at the party) and “internet ah a ck hrat lutuk” (He/she flirts a lot on the internet).

Submitted by Anonymous: Another theory on the origin of "CK" is from a guy who used to flirt a lot… Hence people used to call him "Chhas Kumar-a" = "CK-a".

Submitted by Jinx: Similar to the above lines, a girl who flirts a lot is also called a CK, just as how CK for guys means "Chhas Kumar-a", the CK equivalent for girls is "Chhas Kumar-i".

Dapthawl
Contributed by: Sekibuhchhuak
Contributed by Sekibuhchhuak, dapthawl means to praise the Lord and dance in his Glory with arms raised up high.

Funte/Pehtreh
Contributed by: Hruaia
This comes under “alcoholic slang”. A “funte” literally means “small package”, and it is used in reference to our locally brewed liquor. The illegal local (arrack) is packed into a small (transparent) polythene package, and such a package is aptly names “funte”. It is also popularly known as “Pehtreh”.

Corrected by Bekang^Roll and Jinx that Pehte is Pehtreh. Corrections made. Thank you.

Jabit/jakoos
Contributed by: Opie
This means to have sex. It can also be used in other contexts such as, “Jabit film in nei em?” (Do you have any porn movies?) and “A jakoos zei hmel khawp mai” (She looks like a real pro when it comes to sex) . Other slangs for this are “Marzar” [Submitted by Sundancer] and “Sox” [Submitted by Bekang^Roll].

Kap

One meaning for “kap” is a proper mizo word meaning “to shoot”. The other slang version of it basically means “to make fun of”. “Sam an mi kah a hrat” (Sam loves to pull everybody’s leg), “Mi a kap na thei” (He really makes fun of people harshly).

Krainch

Another slang invented by the youth. “An in krainch a” which means “they krainched each other” where the verb krainch does not exactly make complete sense but obviously making a statement that they some sort of flirted or kissed each other.

KS

This is slang for “prostitute”. It is an acronym for “Khawpui Service” which means “somebody who services the entire city”. Cute huh.

Ox

This is slang for “kiss” / “smooch”. Other slang expressions for the term “kiss” are “pe dak” and “kuai dak” [Sub by: Hruaia]

Sis

This is a popular slang among the youth… It means "marijuana". It is pronounced with a hissing sound, like the sound you make when you inhale tobacco deeply, and that is probably how it got its name. “sis in nei em” (Do you have any marijuana) and “i sis chu han zu i la” (Let’s smoke your grass). It is also known as “Tual” [Sub by: Hruaia]

Strots

Another slang that’s quickly becoming popular, it is again used in reference to somebody who is dressed in tight fitting clothes (especially skintights or tight jeans). “saw nu saw chu a ava strots ve” and “kha pa kha a kal strots strots mai”.
Zuai

It means “a quickie”. Further explanation not required, I believe.

Single letter usage

The act of adding the single alphabet “s” to a formal word is very popular among the youth. They have the habit of modifying a particular word and adding the alphabet “s” at the end, in order to sound more youth-like or hep. “Ka ngei bawn tawps”, “Ka puar over tawps”, “Ka star raps” etc

Another form of informal Mizo is the use of the “o” instead of “aw”. In proper Mizo, “aw” is pronounced like the English “o” while the Mizo “o” is prounced like the English “ow”. Inspire of this, many youngsters now use “o” in place of “aw”. Eg: “Top” instead of “Tawp”. And then there is the use of other alphabets like “x” (xonga instead of zawnga) etc.

Mizo cuss words

It’s true, in Mizo we don’t have any abusive words. Mizos with non-Mizo friends are always shocked to find out that there are no such insults in Mizo. Of course we can always translate a particular abusive word literally into Mizo, but the fact is, people in Mizoram just don’t call each other with those names. It sounds very awkward. Words like Bastard, Mofo, Bitch, F-words, your mother’s this and that etc etc are never used in Mizo. Instead there is just one popular cuss word, and that is “zawnga” (fem: zawngi)

Funny thing is, “zawnga” literally means “monkey”! However, call anybody with that word and it is interpreted as an extreme aggression. Do expect a good fight after that. Other words that are commonly used are “Hmel-a” (fem: Hmel-i) and “Ek-a” (fem: Ek-i). Basically, they mean just “Face” and “shit”. Don’t you just love the passive Mizo language?

Opie

A guy who can’t procreate is called an “Opie” (pronounced “O.P.”). Their reproductive organs are completely useless, probably due to prolonged masturbation at childhood. Example: “Chanmari ah khuan OPie a a awm a sin” (There’s an OPie living in Chanmari). Such people usually ask their partners to go for an artificial insemination, hence the term “OPie” is also used to refer to “in vitro fertilization”. “Fa kan nei thei si lova, kan va OPie ve tawp dawn emni le” (Since we can’t have a child, shall we go for an artificial method?).

Zimmy

When guys get drunk, they usually do three stupid things: Flirt, Fight and Phone. A “zimmy” is somebody who does the third action: calling up somebody on the phone whenever he is drinking and then talking for hours. Example: “Vawin chu ka thianpa a rawn zimmy leh tawh a” (Today my friend got drunk and called me up on the phone again). It is usually not possible to understand what the caller is mumbling about over the phone, but he will go on an on and on. Once, I was zimmied, and the caller incoherently blabbered, "aurrm… Hdkakkd… kiwyrrrr… ngharrturr… burr… skljuyt…" and I just went, "Uhuh, yeah… I know… right…" It was late in the night and I was tired, so I slept off while listening to him. Next morning I woke up and the phone was still on! I picked up the receiver and listened cautiously… My friend was still talking! “uyierrr… drwqqq… khsdf hjdlks… uyiuixxxr…" And I continued "Yes… exactly! I know… That’s cool…" He finally disconnected when I told him it’s time for lunch…
