Chp 307. Of losing (Holland) and losers (others)

Boring Finals. What an anti-climax. Extra time. Finally Spain scored at the fag end of extra time. 1-0. By then, many of us watching the match on TV were glad the boring ordeal was finally over.

I’m not going to write any match review here. Still hurts a bit. At the end of the day, Netherlands committed too many fouls while Spain played better and deserved to win the title. Congrats.

But you know what is irritating?

I can live with Spanish fans behaving like jerks and rubbing it in my face. After all, this is football and this is what we do to each other. I would have done the same to them too had Netherlands won. I got no beef with them. And by them I mean actual Spanish fans who had been behind Spain since the beginning of this World Cup. Respect to you folks for winning the coveted title.

But what I can’t stand are those spineless slimy (even slimier than Paul the octopus) freeloading so called fans who switch teams the moment their team loses. They talk about how much they support one team (say Brazil, Germany, England etc) and how they are hardcore fanatics ready to go till the end supporting their team, AND the moment their team is eliminated, they suddenly talk about how crazy they are about the next team to play and how that team has always been their favorite team (or second favorite team) every World Cup! Lolz, losers.

I mean, seriously, there is nothing wrong in cheering for a team if your team has already been eliminated. Had Netherlands lost, I would have still watched the other matches, supporting one of the teams playing. But I would never act like a hardcore fan of that team just because my team has been eliminated. There’s this thing called conscience. Too bad it’s absent in so many people.

Why is there a need to blatantly lie and mislead others into believing that the team you’re cheering for has won the World Cup, when you know deep inside that you’re just fooling yourself?

This Finals too, a lot of Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Germany, England and Portugal fans that I know, suddenly acted like Spain had always been the team they’ve cheered for since the beginning of this World Cup. Lolzzz. Many of them said Spain had actually been their second favorite team (and not because they made it to the Finals ) Why is it so hard to simply say they’re going to support Spain for the Finals, because they like the way the team plays or they find the players handsome etc? There’s nothing wrong in that. Why dump your original team just because they didn’t make it and then try to convince everybody (and yourself) that Spain had always been your team since the beginning?

Well, I am not going to argue with anyone because this is just a game. It is pretty silly to do that. And also because if you fight with a pig, you both get dirty, but after sometime you realize that the pig is actually enjoying it. So I too will join the sty and proudly and unabashedly claim that Spain had always been my second favorite team to win the World Cup too!

You know what this means???? My favorite team came in SECOND and my second favorite team came in FIRST!!!! WOW!!!! First place and second place! Yay! Beat that you Germany, Brazil, England etc suckers who were supporting Spain in the Finals!

Ah. World Cup. It certainly brings out the child in me. All the things I mentioned above are just in jest by the way. I love you all, even if you weren’t supporting for Netherlands This is that once-in-four-years opportunity when you can really fry your friends or be fried by them. Too bad all this is coming to an end now. See you all again in 2014, where I’ll still be cheering for the Netherlands as usual (unless of course, by a very wild shot, India makes it to the qualifying rounds! )

Dude i know what you are try to tell. For most, its not a tough thing to change their fav team. I am a hardcore Germany fan and watching them lose against Spain was painful. Though Am not a fan of Holland, i was supporting Holland because i just can't support Spain.

@ AK: Yup I think it is just the hardcore football fans who find it difficult to suddenly change their team. There is nothing wrong in cheering for another team if your team is not playing. But to falsely claim that that team is actually your team all along, is so wrong :)

I guess to non-football fans, the word loyalty does not exist in their vocabulary :D Maybe that is why guys who love football remain loyal to their girlfriends/wives and all the cheaters are non football fans (just trying to light a fuse here. lolz)

@ chhangte_II: hahaha, lucky you for sleeping. It was a very boring Finals. Dunno if this or the '94 Finals was more boring.

I have said this earlier and say it again."No sports...no life:know sports...know life"
Even i met so many wannabe espafuckiniol fans.Quite hard to digest.Ask them who there coach was and they go blank.More so,are the emotionally supporting them or just for the heck of it?

Nevertheless,football is a circle.Just suck the experience.And if it pains[yes,as German fan it does]...u know what...its probably working !!!

Hey Kima,I still love Netherlands team.N yes, every time i see them play,it reminds be of future Arsenal. :-)

Well put, well said. I don't know who these friends of your are (:P) are but i am a hardcore Argentina fan and 2014 is ours!

I was supporting spain cuz i love the line-up but would have bet on Germany to atleast reach the finals.

Hard luck on Holland's defeat. Even our shoves were in good jest. It was fun, this world cup, and now we will be bak to EPL rivalries!

all the best for that!

Let me start by saying I'm not a football fan. In fact the only game I play passionately (closely related to football) is foosball.

Began watching the World Cup cos my entire family watched it and realized that soccer players make the best-looking athletes. Or maybe the best-looking athletes happen to be soccer players. It's a chicken-and-egg question. No one likes it when an athlete injures himself, but I do love a spectacle.

Supported Argentina at first and when they didn't deliver I went into a short depression. When it came to Spain and Netherlands. I picked Spain. And what do y'know. They won. So I'm happy.

@ Mayank: hehehe... so true. So many times I have kept quiet when I sit with guys bragging about how much they love a particular club and how many years they've been following it, when they know nothing about the club. That's when I feel bad letting them know that I actually know what they're talking about, and that they're a load of bull$hit :)

@ P.D.: lolz. All the best to your team on 2014. And hopefully we shall meet and make mince meat (kheema) out of you guys. bwahahaha. Right now, my guns are focused on EPL too. Can't wait to see the Gunners demolish ur team :D

@ Eveline: Congrats :) It was a good match and Spain came close to taking a lead a number of times (and so did Netherlands). But believe me, the semi finals and quarters and other matches were way more interesting than the finals. In fact, I think the 1-0 victory over Germany was the only Spain match worth watching this World Cup. All their other matches were very boring IMHO.

@ Opa: That's what happens when you falsely claim to be a grapes lover, when you're not. :D

Sorrry to see the Dutch lose a third time. Would you believe I actually saw live telecast of their first final in '74 when Cruyff was at his best!!.Didn't know much about World cup then, but remembered all the sportscasters talking about his beautiful moves. Fourth time lucky, p'haps.

it was a boring match indeed. felt like wasted sleep!! and yeah, i have to agree. there are a few ppl who act like they wud bet their property on their fav team an dthen it changes when the team goes off. i have a friend like that. he supported brazil big time. infact, real BIG time and last night, he was cryin coz netherlands lost!! we never understood why he was cryin coz we didnt even have a remote clue that he was supportin netherland!! uff!! anyways, with waka waka over, wonderin what it'll be in brasil!!!

Kima, please dont take this the wrong way but I actually find this whole you have to support a team business a bit ridiculous.

I mean come on man, whom are we trying to kid ? I liked Arsenal and still do to an extent because of the style of play. But if that changes, I am no longer going to support them. This whole thing is nothing but a big market and we are all consumers.

Can we really care if some faraway country that has nothing to do with us and probably doesnt want to have anything to do with us wins a game or not ?

@ dr feelgood: I envy you so much! Wish I was that old to have watched the '74 WC. Like I mentioned before in my Holland related posts, I wasn't around during the Cruff era, but I really wish I was! He's one of the biggest football legends in the World!

@ Dr. Chandana: hehehe... well I guess your friend likes the team. Too bad his team lost. Even I was crying... :)

@ Vikram: hey bro its ok, feel free to criticize :) I agree that at the end of the day, products and brands gain the most while we are just another fish in the sea spending money and time watching matches. Sure, we got nothing to gain if any of these countries or clubs win. But then, it relieves us from our stressful work life etc and gives us that small chance to do something we truly enjoy lest we slip into a world of insanity. EPL - I have never missed any Arsenal game for the past 10 years (am exaggerating a bit here :) ). Thats like 2 hours a week on football. 2 hours of complete relaxation mixed with excitement. My escape to the surreal world. Total bliss :)

@ Kym: hahaha! Good one :)

@ P.D: whats that smell??? ewwww.... smells like... manure... yuckkk! (and the EPL war of words started! or is it too soon?)

@ samuelapa: lolz. good point :)
